Raccoons are primarily nocturnal and crepuscular, meaning they are most active at night and dawn and dusk. They are occasionally active during the day, but this doesn't necessarily mean they are sick.

Raccoons use dens for shelter and raising young. Dens can be found in a variety of places, including hollow trees, rock crevices, abandoned burrows, brush piles, and attics. Raccoons typically move to different dens every few days.

Raccoons usually mate from December through June, with most litters born in April or May. The gestation period is about 63 days, and litters typically have four cubs, but can range from one to seven.

Raccoons are mostly solitary, but mothers and their young sometimes form social groups. Adult males are territorial and have ranges of 3–20 square miles, while females have ranges of 1–6 square miles.

Raccoons have a highly developed sense of touch in the tips of their noses and the palms of their forepaws. They also have a strong sense of hearing.

Raccoons are known for washing their food, and they prefer sweets and avoid sour foods.

Raccoons are strong swimmers, but they may be reluctant to do so because they don't have waterproof fur.

Raccoons can live 10–15 years in the wild.

The name "raccoon" comes from the Algonquian Indian word arakun, which means "he scratches with his hands".

Raccoons & Disease

Raccoons can carry a number of diseases that can be transmitted to humans, including:

  • Raccoon roundworm: A rare but potentially fatal parasitic infection caused by the Baylisascaris roundworm. Raccoons carry the eggs of this roundworm in their feces, which can contaminate the soil, water, or other materials. Humans can become infected by accidentally ingesting the eggs, which hatch into larvae that can migrate to the brain, eyes, spinal cord, or other organs. Symptoms include nausea, tiredness, loss of coordination, and blindness. Early treatment can prevent serious illness.
  • Bacterial diseases: Raccoons can carry bacterial diseases like salmonella or E. coli.
  • Fungi and rare parasites: Raccoons can carry fungi and rare parasites that can make humans sick.

To prevent the spread of disease from raccoons to humans, you can:

  • Avoid keeping, feeding, or adopting wild animals as pets
  • Wash your hands after working or playing outdoors
  • Remove and bury or dispose of raccoon feces and contaminated materials
  • Treat surfaces with boiling water to reduce the risk of exposure
  • Practice good hygiene and sanitation to prevent exposure to skin, eyes, mouth, and body

If you suspect you have been exposed to raccoon feces, you should consult a health care provider immediately.
